We Help Children in San Luis Obispo

PURSUE THEIR PASSIONS and REALIZE THEIR DREAMS

What We Do

OUR MISSION

PEAK’s mission is to enable all TK-12 students with financial need in San Luis Obispo to participate in extracurricular activities. PEAK is a volunteer-run nonprofit organization, and every dime raised pays for activity tuition, equipment/supplies, and operating expenses.

Because PEAK is a 501(c)(3) organization, all donations are tax deductible.

PEAK scholarships are designed to help San Luis Obispo families in need. In an effort to serve the greatest number of students, PEAK scholarships do not exceed $250 per student per calendar year.

OUR VISION

PEAK's vision is that one day all students in San Luis Obispo will have opportunities to pursue the extracurricular activities they are most passionate about.

What We Care About

Helping Local Children Find Their Passion and Pursue It

When children have freedom to explore different extracurricular activities, they learn what works and what doesn't. They also learn that  failure is just part of the process of figuring out which activities excite them, motivate them to succeed, and make them feel like a part of a community.

Connecting SLO Kids with Adult Coaches and Teachers

The skills and talents acquired through an ECA are meaningful but by no means the only benefits of participation. Equally important are the relationships formed with adult coaches and teachers. In many cases, they become positive role models and mentors, enriching students’ lives and helping them develop valuable talents and interpersonal skills.

Language or technological barriers can hinder students’ access to extracurricular activities. Some students and families may not know which ECAs are available or how to register for them due to language barriers or lack of information provided by schools.

Helping Students Gain Lifelong Skills and Self-Confidence

Exploring different activities and interests at a young age can help individuals discover their passions and what they truly love to do. Trying new things can lead to valuable experiences that shape personal preferences and career choices later in life. A talent that does not become a vocation can turn into a lifelong hobby.

Expert Insights

Finding Purpose

“A sense of purpose gives children direction, motivation, and a deeper sense of meaning in everything they do. It helps them understand that their actions matter and that they can contribute to the world in ways that align with their values and interests.

When we teach our children purpose, we’re not just teaching them what to do—we’re helping them build the foundation for a joyful, happy life. Purpose drives passion, and passion fuels happiness. If we want our children to be truly fulfilled, teaching them how to discover and pursue their own purpose is essential.”

Benefits of ECAs

"Participating in extracurricular activities (ECAs) can offer children numerous benefits, such as developing interpersonal competencies, and, in the long-term, higher educational achievement, better employment outcomes and better mental health. . . .

Further, there is evidence to suggest that outcomes related to social inclusion, such as school bonding, school membership, peer pro-social orientation, bullying, peer engagement, sense of community, teamwork and social responsibility improve as a result of ECA participation.

Access to and take-up of ECAs, however, is more challenging for certain groups of disadvantaged and vulnerable children, which could potentially contribute to exacerbating social and economic inequalities. Hence, making sure that all children have equal access to ECAs is important."
